JTED Education Professions Program to Begin

Mountain Institute has received permission from the Arizona Department of Education to provide introductory training for future Education Professionals beginning this fall.  The Arizona Program, entitled “Ed Professions” is modeled after a successful South Carolina program called CADET Teachers.  The coursework was adopted by the Arizona Department of Education in 2001 and now has numerous school districts throughout the state participating.

The program provides introductory coursework in Education classes to high school juniors and seniors leading toward six to twelve dual enrollment credits, providing articulation with a community college has been developed.

The program includes a practicum which enables students to observe and participate on a limited basis in local elementary and middle schools as a component of their training.

Taught by specially trained and certified trainers, Ed Professions functions as a “Grow your Own” program designed to recruit, train and, eventually, hire quality teachers in local communities.

It is dependent upon partnerships which would provide a “2 + 2 + 2” educational experience to local youngsters desiring a career in Education as a paraprofessional, certificated teacher or future administrator

The program will be based at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Humboldt Unified School District and be open to qualified students throughout the JTED consortium.

December 2009

The Mountain Institute JTED Governing Board has approved adding the following courses for the 2010 2011 academic year:

Agriculture & Business – Seligman High School
Automotive/Collision & Paint – Yavapai College Career & Technical Education campus (YC CTEC)
Carpentry Technologies – Option A – Advanced Construction (Green Building) – YC CTEC
Education Professions – Bradshaw West Campus
Welding Technologies – Ash Fork, Bagdad, CTEC campuses

New course offerings were based on several criteria including student interest surveys completed at all the JTED partner districts. Male students showed a high interest in Welding, Air Transportation and Construction. Female students were most interested in Cosmetology, Early Childhood Education and Education Professions. ― Air Transportation and Cosmetology are very high cost, intensive equipment programs, explained Program Director Jeramy Plumb. ― We are interested in moving forward with Cosmetology at some future point and are researching possibilities, he said.

Final new course offerings will be determined after approval by the Arizona Department of Education and enrollment numbers.

Plumb said ― research was done on several levels to make course choices. The process included: local school site requests; student interest surveys; facility evaluations; Yavapai College dual enrollment opportunities; budget impact; and career data from the Federal Department of Labor.
